Mr Graham Forbes Cumming

IN MEMORY OF GRAHAM FORBES CUMMING

The news reached us recently of the death of one of our ex-students, Graham Cumming, in tragic circumstances in Cradock on October the 20th.

Graham Forbes Cumming was born on the 20th of June 1942 in Steynsburg, where he attended Primary school before matriculating from Queen’s College in 1961. He spent two very happy years at Grootfontein Agricultural College from which he graduated in 1963. He subsequently farmed on the family farm, Altyre in the Steynsburg district. In addition to this, he started and ran for the last twenty-seven years, the Altyre Shearing Service. He provided work for more than a hundred shearers and served an area that stretched from the Southern Free State down to the South Coast and from the Eastern into the Northern Cape. He got to know every by road and to meet a large number of farmers in the area, to aspects of his work he really loved. His clients included the Grootfontein College of Agriculture, whom he was proud to shear.

Graham was a keen supporter of Agricultural shows. In addition to Merino’s, he bred Hampshire Down sheep of which he produced several South African Champions. He was a keen Bowler and a founder member of the Steynsburg Lions Club, which recently celebrated their 30th birthday. His funeral was attended by family and friends, from all over the country.

He will be sadly missed in the community which he loved and served.
