DIMENSIONAL CHANGES OF FOLLICLES AND FIBRES DURING PRE- AND

POSTNATAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE ANGORA GOAT

D.WENTZEL and L. P. VOSLOO, Agricultural Research Institute of the Karoo Region, Middelburg, C.P

ABSTRACT

Follicle and fibre development were studied in skin sections from Angora goat foetuses and kids. Except for minor differences, the pattern of development corresponds to that found in sheep. Initiation and growth of follicles reached a maximum during the fourth month of gestation while fibre development was confined mainly to the first four months following birth. Follicle development, including initiation and maturation of follicles, was unexpectedly quiescent during the last month of gestation but was resumed soon after partus.
