RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LONGISSIMUS DORSI AREA AND DIFFERENT MASSES IN DORPER SHEEP

P.G. MARAIS

GROOTFONTEIN, MIDDELBURG C.P.

The relationships between live mass and Longissimus dorsi area and carcass mass and L.dorsi area were studied using 26 rams, 26 ewes and 26 wethers ranging in age from one week to 39 weeks. One lamb of each sex was slaughtered at weekly intervals up to 13 weeks of age whereafter, slaughtering took place every fortnight till 39 weeks of age. The live and carcass mass of each lamb, as well as the L.dorsi area, was recorded.

Relationships were derived between live mass and L.dorsi area for each sex. The equations were:

y = 2,803 + 0,23x for ewes, y = 3,190 + 0,20x for rams, and y = 3,577 + 0,23x for wethers. An adjusted equation between carcass mass and L.dorsi area was derived for all three sexes: ŷ = 3,822 + 0,362x.

These equations can be used to evalute the L.dorsi area in replacement sheep.
