The following study was conducted to determine whether ovulation rate in merino ewes mated to Ronderib Afrikaner rams is higher than that of Merino ewes exposed to Merino rams. On the first of October 118 Merino ewes were divided on a stratified body mass basis into two groups. One group was mated to vasectomized Afrikaner and the control group to vasectomized Merino rams. Each ram was fitted with a radling harness to identify ewes displaying overt oestrus. Nine days following oestrus ovulation rate was determined laparoscopically. Forty eight percent of the Merino ewes exposed to Ronderib Afrikaner rams had twin ovulations as compared to the 21% in ewes exposed to Merino rams. (P < 0.01). The increased ovulation rate of 27.7% recorded for ewes mated to Ronderib Afrikaner rams provides ample support for the hypothesis that the increased fecundity recorded in ewes mated to Ronderib Afrikaner rams is the result of an increased ovulation rate.
