Grootfontein’s SRC Vice Chairperson, Sandile Nzuza (22), was elected President of the Association of Students in Agricultural Tertiary Institutes on the 15th February 2017, at Fort Cox Agriculture and Forestry Training Institute between Alice and King William’s Town.

ASATI was established in September 2015, after the resolution to form the association came about in Benoni, Gauteng; where the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries(DAFF) held a round table discussion session with student representatives from all 11 Agricultural Tertiary Institutes(ATI). The Association was established to rally behind and advance the needs and wants of students, and also to expose the ATI students to the world of Agriculture and to the industries, and their processes.

As President, he will be leading a delegation of SRC representatives, and they will be part of decision making processes of the ATIs, alongside industries and all the relevant stakeholders within the Agricultural sector. He will also be representing all ATIs in the DAFF Steering Committee in the shifting of Agricultural Tertiary Institutes from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), whereas the association they have taken a stance to go against this move and feel it would be best if all colleges moved to the national directorate within DAFF rather than being moved to DHET.
