Angora Goats promoted at Royal Agricultural Show in Pietermaritzburg:

The Grootfontein Student Angora stud at Middelburg in the Eastern Cape attended the Royal Agricultural show in Pietermarizburg from 28 May to 1 June 2018. During this show they exhibited their angora goats while promoting Grootfontein Agricultural College and the Angora breed to attendance at the Royal show. Thousands of scholars passed through the show and were highly impressed by this breed as well as the way the third year students presented themselves.

Some of the goats were shorn by Amos Masaheti while the students showed the people how they carefully handle the animals. During the sheering process the students explained to the visitors what Amos was doing.

A very tame angora kid was led by the students between the visitors and created great excitement during the 5 days. The scholars really enjoyed it to feel and touch its soft curly hair.

Grootfontein Students also had the opportunity to see other breeds of cattle which they don’t normally find in the Middelburg area. Breeds like Brahman, limousines, Simmentalers and Braunviehs were just a few to mention. They also attended the Royal Show Carcass competition which was won by Gert & Louise Lötter from Hofmeyer!

The Grootfontein Student Angora stud would like to thank the following sponsors for the outfits they recently received: Drostdy Toyota (Graaff-Reinet), Stucken Mohair & Wool Buyers and OVK.

The students are looking forward to the kidding season in the beginning of August. With the recent conception results, there might be a bumper crop this year!!
