2019 NACSANO Tournament Results:

“The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that wether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” ~ Vincent Lombardi

The Grootfontein Soccer Team (GST) has undoubtedly put up everything they’ve got into this year’s NACSANO (National Agricultural Colleges Soccer and Netball Organization) tournament. Every player was so determined that it rubbed to the people watching the play. The unity, passion and the love shared by the group of players was something that the whole crowd admired about GST and is it hereby very safe to say that the team has continued to make a mark in this annual tournament.

Before the tournament the Grootfontein soccer and netball team had an opportunity to visit Kaizer Chiefs, one of the greatest soccer clubs in South Africa.

The visit was all to entice the soccer and netball teams for a great tournament that was hosted by Potchefstroom College of Agriculture. The teams got an opportunity to meet some of the current super stars of South African elite league and also to see the whole infrastructure of the village (Naturena).

They also had a chance to visit the trophy room, the gym, Kaizer Chiefs retail shop and the development side’s housing. They were taken through the entire history of the club and also shared a little bit of biography of the founder of the club Mr. Kaizer Motaung and his passion for this beautiful game of soccer.

GST managed to put up great group stage performances qualifying for semi-finals after winning the opening two games of the group stages. Once again GST embarked on a mission to bring the first ever NACSANO trophy home and re-write history books. However, it wasn’t to be as this team fell short and lost to Taung College of Agriculture in a controversial semi-final match.

GST subsequently played 3rd and 4th play-offs where their comfortable victory against Tsolo College of Agriculture ensured that the team bring home a bronze medal (an improvement from last year’s fourth position). In consolation, coach Phutiane said to the team: “Your passion, hard work, brotherhood and good sportsmanship has touched many lives, mine included, and I just wish that you can take this knock to the chin and look forward into the future”.

In general, the entire NACSANO 2018 tournament was marred by controversy, conflicts and unfortunate incidents that should not be allowed to perpetuate as they can seriously spoil the beautiful game of soccer as well as taint the image of NACSANO. The 2019 NACSANO tournament will be hosted by Glen College of Agriculture (Bloemfontein).

The Agricultural colleges that participated in this years’ tournament were Grootfontein, Potchefstroom, Fort Cox, Taung, Elsenburg, Cedara, Tsolo, Madzivhandila and Owen Sithole. Tompi and Glen did not take part in the NACSANO 2018 tournament.

Below are the results of this year’s tournament:

  1. Group Stages:

ü   GST 2 – 1 Owen Sithole College of Agric

ü   GST 4 – 2 Elsenburg Agric College

ü   GST 0 – 3 Fort Cox Agric College

  1. Semi-finals

ü   GST 1 – 2 Taung College of Agric

  1. 3rd & 4th Playoffs

ü   GST 3 – 0 Tsolo College of Agric

The Grootfontein Soccer Team (GST) are very much driven by a belief that all things are possible through Christ (Phil3:14) and are very much in agreement with Grant Taylor (Alex Kendrick) quote from the movie Facing the Giants as he said “If we win, we praise Him. And if we lose, we praise Him. Either way we honour Him with our actions and our attitudes”. That was very much evident from the group as they sang joyously and enthusiastically so to a point where some of the crowd couldn’t contain themselves but join in the singing.

On the 27 of October 2018 the GST in collaboration with an organisation called Living Ball and some of the Middelburg farmers will host an inaugural primary schools tournament. The tournament will feature all the primary schools of the Middelburg town; they will come to converge at Grootfontein College of Agriculture competing in four sporting codes (soccer, netball, rugby & athletics).

This tournament is the first of its kinds in that all the participating schools will be the winners on the day as they believe that they would have reached to the most deprived and needy talented future sportsmen and women.

Through this tournament GST aim to use sport as a vehicle of hope and faith as a fuel of positive living to the youth of Middelburg and the surrounding and to promote and encourage:

  1.       Healthy living and participation in sport by the youth
  2.       Healthy sports rivalry among the schools
  3.       Unity of purpose through sport
  4.       To eliminate stigma and discrimination amongst youth
