Dohne Merinos donated to Grootfontein


The Dohne Merino Breeders’ Society of South Africa donated sheep to the Mixed Farming Production Unit at Grootfontein College of Agriculture, Middelburg EC.


The students on the photograph are from the left Berenice Barendse, Nonxwe Sesethi, Mdlambuzi Sinethemba, Ndevu Nomawethu, Sotondoshe Andiswa and Bryan King (responsible officer). In front is Saumane Kgopodise.


Third-year students of the College are divided into groups that farm the production units. They farm this unit for a year, keep records and hand in assignment at the end of the year documenting their farming enterprise.

The Mixed Farming Production Unit will consist of cattle, sheep, chickens and vegetables.

The breeders who donated sheep are from the East Cape/North East Cape and Karoo regions. They are Messrs Frans and Andries Marx (Burgersdorp), Andries Pienaar (White Wools, Hanover), Flippie Marais (Lowmar Dohnes, Cradock), Jean de la Harpe (De la Harpe Trust, Graaff-Reinet),  Philip Erasmus (Somerset East), Gavin Hobson (Graaff-Reinet), Zeiss Jordaan (Cradock), Jullian and André Pienaar (Colesberg).
