First-year students from the Grootfontein College of Agriculture, Middelburg were welcomed at the College on Friday 31 January 2014 and attended a team building event on Saturday. At the event they had the opportunity to learn more about team building and also got to know each other.

The first-year class of 2014 will be following the new CBL curriculum at GADI. It is called competency based learning because the training is aimed at achieving Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes that will allow learners to perform certain tasks related to farming.

GADI did research over a period of nearly two years to create a list of competencies that a farmer should have. This list has about 150 items which can be seen as a job description of a farmer. Potential employers and many farmers were consulted in this process. The list of competencies cover all aspects that will be required for farming mainly with small stock and mainly in the semi-arid areas of South Africa. Other farm animals, crops and geographical areas are also covered, but the emphasis is on sheep and goat farming in the Karoo.

Grootfontein is the only agricultural college that managed to get a new curriculum in place this year.
