Project No: AP4/9

Title: Prediction of lambing date based on clinical examination prior to parturition in ewes
Project Leader: Dr JV Viljoen Starting date: August 2010
Partners: Closing date: July 2011

Objectives: * Determine in which way the change in udder size and the tone thereof prior to parturition might be an indicator of the lambing date
* Determine how the time of colostrum appearance, the colour and consistency changes prior to parturition might be an indicator of the lambing date
* Determine how the vulva swelling and the size of the vaginal opening prior to parturition might be an indicator of the lambing date
* Determine which body conformation parameters prior to parturition need to be observed as an indicator of the lambing date
* Determine how the sacrococcygeal (tail root) muscle tension changes prior to parturition is an indicator of the lambing date
* Determine if temperature change of the ewe prior to lambing might be an indicator of the lambing date
* Determine the behaviour changes and how the behaviour changes prior to lambing might be an indicator of the lambing date
* Give advice to farmers (based on the clinical parameters) which ewes are closest to lambing in order to introduce them into the lambing pens.
